Canvas and printer settings

Stretching canvas should not take up all of your time and resources. Below is an interactive spreadsheet to help you with printing your images onto the right frame size. Please allow the page to load and enter your Wunderbars sizes in the X and Y Axis boxes. The sheet will then calculate your image size and your canvas size (for crop marks). Please note that this formula only works with Wunderbars stretcher bar profile and will not work for other profiles.

*N.B - Gallery Wrap is where the image is down the side of the frame and the rear. Face only means that the image is on top of the frame and the sides and rear are left white.

We have used the profile for the Wunderbars for two reasons. Firstly is to offer a nice chunky, weighty and solid feel to the finished canvas, but to also be used as a straight edge and width measure for the rear of the canvas when setting up the stretch.

Following the printing instructions above, when you have cut out your canvas, turn it over and place a spare Wunderbars stretcher bar onto the edge of the canvas. Draw a line down the canvas on all 4 sides. The size of the internal square you have drawn will be the size of the fame you want to use. If you are doing a "face only" image this will also be perfect for the lining up of the image (hold it up to the light and see!). So with the Wunderbars you don't really need a ruler either !!!

* Checking your X and Y Axis on your printer a word of caution *

One thing we need to stress when stretching canvas is that you regularly check the X and the Y axis are printing to the sizes you have asked them to be printed. Tighter canvas rolls, especially near the end of the roll can throw/slip your image out by a few millimeters as can cheaper style canvas and unmaintained printers. We recommend you telephone your local printer/canvas stockist for further information should it not print to the correct size.
